Zydus Launches Low-Cost Nivolumab Biosimilar Tishtha in India After Court Greenlight

The India-made immunotherapy enters the market at about one-fourth of the reference drug’s price to broaden access to checkpoint-inhibitor treatment.

Overview

  • The Delhi High Court allowed Zydus to proceed with the launch even though the reference drug’s Indian patent remains valid until May 2026.
  • Tishtha is available in 100 mg and 40 mg vials priced at Rs 28,950 and Rs 13,950, with Zydus highlighting dose optimization and reduced wastage.
  • Nivolumab, sold as Opdivo globally and Opdyta in India by Bristol Myers Squibb, is a checkpoint inhibitor used for cancers including lung, colon, liver, head and neck, and kidney.
  • Zydus says the therapy, developed and manufactured in India, could benefit more than 500,000 patients by improving affordability and continuity of care.
  • The launch addresses a rising oncology burden in India, where ICMR reports nearly 1.5 million new cancer cases annually and nivolumab ranks among the world’s top-selling drugs by value.
