ZeniMax Removes Web Crown Store After Xbox Layoffs

ZeniMax says reduced staff forced the change to limit work during a transition to a scaled roadmap.

Overview

  • Microsoft’s broader Xbox cuts earlier this month eliminated hundreds of ZeniMax roles and prompted leadership departures that sharply reduced ESO’s development and web teams.
  • On July 22, ZeniMax disabled the web-facing Crown Store on elderscrollsonline.com and changed the monthly Crown Store Showcase to a simpler, list-style format to reduce workload.
  • Players can still buy crown currency on the website but must log into The Elder Scrolls Online to view and purchase Crown Store items.
  • ZeniMax said the team no longer has capacity to produce high-resolution Crown Store screenshots at prior scale, a change that will hinder community resources such as the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages.
  • The studio is drafting a scaled content roadmap and preserving core monetization, but reporters and players warn the cuts could slow update cadence, cancel projects, and erode institutional knowledge.
