ZeniMax Online Reaffirms ESO’s Future as Major Features Move to 2027

Recent Xbox cuts reduced ZeniMax's capacity, prompting a shift to longer development runways with closer coordination with Bethesda.

Overview

  • Nick Giacomini wrote on July 30 that he and longtime studio veteran Josh Henderson will co‑lead ZeniMax Online and that “ESO is here to stay.”
  • Company filings and reporting show roughly 379 ZeniMax roles were cut in early July, including about 213 positions at ZeniMax Online, significantly reducing development bandwidth.
  • The studio has moved the Crimson Veldt trial, Update 52, and the next Class and Combat refresh into 2027 while keeping most 2026 seasonal content such as Update 51 and Season Two on a slightly revised schedule.
  • ZeniMax says it will adopt a ‘quality experiences over calendar dates’ policy to give teams more runway to finish complex systems like mounted combat and the combat overhaul rather than hit previous deadlines.
  • Former staff and players warn lost institutional knowledge and fewer QA resources could slow release cadence and raise delivery risk, while ZeniMax argues closer work with Bethesda offers new ways to align resources and ideas.
