YouTube Adds Premium-Only Podcast Tools to Boost Listening and Discovery

The company is shifting toward an audio-first experience and using AI recommendations to retain and grow paying podcast listeners.

Overview

  • YouTube announced on May 28, 2026 that it is rolling out three podcast features for Premium users on Android—on-the-go mode, Auto speed, and Ask Music podcast recommendations—with iOS support promised in the months ahead.
  • On-the-go mode provides an audio-first layout for mobile with larger playback buttons, a static image in place of video, and quick controls for skipping and episode navigation to make background listening easier.
  • Auto speed automatically adjusts playback speed during slower speech or information-dense segments so listeners can move through episodes more efficiently without losing comprehension.
  • Ask Music has been expanded to surface podcast recommendations by genre, mood, or shows you already like using an AI-style prompt interface, with availability limited to regions that already support Ask Music in YouTube Music.
  • YouTube framed the update as a move to hold and grow its podcast audience after reporting more than 1 billion monthly podcast viewers and over 800 million Premium podcast hours in April 2026, and industry observers say it positions YouTube to compete with audio-first rivals while monetizing heavy listeners through Premium.
