Youth Softball Coach Arrested in Online Sting for Soliciting 15-Year-Old

Recorded chat logs showing requests for nude photos as part of arranged meeting plans prompted the arrest.

Overview

  • Harris County Precinct 1 deputies arrested 37-year-old Nathan Scott Velez on Thursday and charged him with third-degree felony online solicitation of a minor.
  • Precinct 1 investigators say an undercover detective posing as a 15-year-old engaged Velez in several explicit chats that began in April and included requests for nude photos and detailed sexual acts.
  • Court records quoted messages allegedly from Velez such as “When do I get to see your body?” and show he moved to arrange an in-person meeting with the undercover persona.
  • Velez faces two to ten years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine if convicted, and authorities are asking anyone with information about his interactions with children to call Precinct 1’s Crimes Against Children Unit at 713-222-4929.
  • Officials said Velez coaches a Montgomery County youth softball team and works as a lineman, and they noted the arrest grew from an Internet Crimes Against Children undercover operation that investigators commonly use to identify adults who solicit minors.
