Young Camper Mauled by Large Saltwater Crocodile North of Broome

Authorities opened an investigation with a warning to camp at least 50 metres from the water.

Overview

  • The man in his 20s was bitten on a beach beside Hidden Creek, beyond the Coulomb Point Nature Reserve, on Saturday about 50 kilometres north of Broome.
  • He was treated at Broome Hospital in a stable condition before the Royal Flying Doctor Service flew him to Royal Perth Hospital, where he is undergoing surgery.
  • Western Australia’s Parks and Wildlife Service said Monday it was notified of the attack, spoke with a relative of the victim, and will conduct a site visit as part of its investigation.
  • Officials urged people in the Kimberley to stay “crocwise,” to pitch camps at least 50 metres from the water, and to keep children and pets away from shorelines.
  • Saltwater crocodiles occupy Kimberley beaches, creeks and tidal rivers year-round, and this is the second reported attack in under five months after a January case near La Djardarr Bay.
