Yankees Place Ryan McMahon on 10-Day IL After Drained Throat Abscess

He faces a short, monitored recovery with a projected earliest return around July 3.

Overview

  • The Yankees placed McMahon on the 10-day injured list Wednesday after team doctors diagnosed and drained a peritonsillar abscess.
  • McMahon said he had severe pain, migraines, trouble eating and limited jaw opening but reported feeling better after the procedure.
  • The club recalled utilityman Oswaldo Cabrera from Triple-A Scranton to fill McMahon’s roster spot while José Caballero and Amed Rosario shift into infield roles.
  • Because McMahon had not played since Sunday the Yankees backdated the IL to Monday, which makes him first eligible for activation around July 3 pending medical clearance.
  • Peritonsillar abscesses are usually treated with drainage and antibiotics and can rarely cause serious respiratory problems if they rupture, so the team will monitor McMahon for any complications before he returns.
