Yale Pulls Professor From Teaching Over Epstein Email as Review Proceeds

The action follows Justice Department disclosures that exposed years of correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein.

Overview

  • Yale said David Gelernter will not teach during a conduct review and stated it does not condone his described manner of recommending students.
  • The Justice Department’s release includes an Oct. 11, 2011 email in which Gelernter recommended a Yale senior as a “v small goodlooking blonde” for a role.
  • Gelernter defended the note in messages to the dean and to students, writing he is “very glad” he wrote it and asserting neither he nor the student knew of Epstein’s conviction at the time.
  • The DOJ files show Gelernter corresponded with Epstein from 2009 to 2015 on topics such as meetings, business, and art, with his name appearing in 563 entries of the “Epstein Library.”
  • The disclosures have triggered sector-wide responses, including UCLA removing a faculty media profile, Duke closing three research centers that it says for other reasons, and the University of Arizona canceling a conference.
