Yahoo Relaunches Weather App With Hourly Forecasts, Air-Quality Data and Custom Alerts

Built on AccuWeather data, the redesign turns raw metrics into plain-language guidance so users can make quick decisions during extreme weather.

Overview

  • Yahoo rolled out a rebuilt Weather app that places hour-by-hour forecasts and a new daily narrative front and center to give users immediate, decision-ready information.
  • The app uses AccuWeather’s MinuteCast for minute-by-minute precipitation, offers interactive past and future radar, and adds faster maps and phone and tablet-specific layouts.
  • Environmental metrics have been expanded to include air quality, pollen risk, UV index, wind, humidity, visibility and moon phases with branded microcopy that explains what each reading means for daily choices.
  • Users can save multiple locations, add widgets, and opt into government advisories that are customizable by location and severity so alerts for extreme, severe, or moderate conditions show up where they are easiest to act on.
  • Yahoo plans iterative updates with community features and a marketing push that includes a Summer Report and a promotional campaign, positioning the app to compete with built-in options as weather becomes more health- and climate-driven.
