Overview
- The third Etapa Popular Camiño da Costa took place Sunday with more than 200 people registered for a four-hour walk from the Xunta administrative building in Vigo to the Casa da Torre albergue in Redondela to call for improved signage.
- The march was led by Ana Ortiz, the Xunta’s Vigo delegate, together with Tourism director Xosé Merelles and Xacobeo 2027 commissioner Marcos Gómez Román.
- Xunta data cited at the event show the Camino Portugués da Costa has served over 43,000 pilgrims so far this year, a 23% rise versus the same period in 2025, and more than 300,000 people have used the route since its 2016 official recognition.
- The action had backing from the Dirección Xeral de Turismo and local businesses and federations with sponsors including regional trade groups, Coca-Cola, Gadis and other companies.
- Organisers say clearer signs are urgent to stop pilgrims getting lost in Vigo and to protect hotel, restaurant and commerce income on busy days, but the city government has not committed to specific signage work.
