X Ends Creator Revenue Sharing and Rolls Out Original Content Reward

Citing misaligned incentives that encouraged reused, low-effort posts, X is imposing higher thresholds, tighter rules, with payments tied to verifiable originality.

Overview

  • X confirmed on Saturday, Aug. 8 that it has closed new signups to its Creator Revenue Sharing program and will pay out remaining earnings on the regular cadence with disbursements on Aug. 14 and Aug. 28 and a final payment for earnings through Sept. 7 expected around Sept. 11.
  • The replacement Original Content Reward program sets explicit eligibility requirements including being 18+, a Premium X subscriber, at least 500 verified followers, and at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the prior 90 days.
  • X defines eligible original content broadly to include threads, videos, memes, original reporting, analysis, commentary and materially transformative edits, while excluding direct reposts, downloads and untransformed copies of others’ posts.
  • Initial access to the new program is restricted to creators who were in the old revenue-sharing scheme; applications open through Creator Studio with outcomes within three business days, one appeal allowed, and reapplication after 90 days if rejected.
  • The move follows product leadership changes at X, and X’s creators lead says the shift aims to reduce low-effort reuse and push creators to produce new material, a change that will narrow who earns payouts and could reshape creators’ posting strategies.
