Wrong-Way Driver Kills Haverhill Man on I-93, Injures Family of Four

The late-night crash is pushing Massachusetts to accelerate installation of thermal cameras that trigger illuminated wrong-way warnings.

Overview

  • The crash happened late Saturday night on I-93 north near Exit 15A after an 81-year-old motorist entered the northbound ramp at Exit 15B and drove the wrong way, according to state police.
  • A Honda Odyssey and an Audi A4 collided while trying to avoid the SUV and were taken to a Boston hospital for evaluation before the wrong-way vehicle struck a Chevrolet Cruze head-on.
  • The driver of the Cruze, identified by local reports as 28-year-old Riley Sergi of Haverhill, died from his injuries at a Boston-area hospital.
  • The wrong-way driver, Antone Carvalho of Somerset, was treated for unspecified injuries at a hospital and will be summoned to court later under standard traffic-case practice when impairment is not apparent.
  • The crash follows a recent cluster of wrong-way incidents and is accelerating a statewide plan to install roughly 400 thermal detection systems that create detection zones, flash illuminated WRONG WAY signs, and alert state police while officials continue their investigation.
