Wrong-Way Crash on Northbound 405 in Hawthorne Kills One

CHP investigators are probing possible causes after an hours-long northbound 405 closure.

Overview

  • The crash, which occurred Tuesday just before 1 a.m., began after CHP received reports of a black sedan traveling southbound at about 80 mph in the northbound lanes near Imperial Highway and an officer confirmed a collision just south of Rosecrans Avenue.
  • One person was declared dead at the scene and at least one other person was taken to a hospital in unknown condition.
  • Officials said the impact left one vehicle disabled in the HOV lane and another on the right shoulder that caught fire, and firefighters and paramedics worked at the scene.
  • All northbound lanes were briefly shut down and three left lanes were reopened by about 4 a.m., and CHP has not released any identities or determined whether impairment, drugs, or a medical emergency played a role.
  • Wrong-way collisions are routinely investigated for possible impairment or medical events because of the high speeds involved, and the 405 closure is likely to affect morning traffic as investigators collect evidence and witness statements.
