Wrong-Way Crash on Downtown I-75 Kills One and Closes Southbound Lanes

State police say a vehicle traveling the wrong way led to a two-car rollover and fire and investigators are testing evidence to determine why it happened.

Overview

  • Police received 911 reports shortly before 4 a.m. of a car entering I-75 at Dearborn Street and driving north in the southbound lanes, and a short time later emergency crews responded to a two-vehicle rollover and vehicle fire near Rosa Parks Boulevard.
  • All southbound lanes of I-75 between Grand River Road and Rosa Parks Boulevard were closed and traffic was diverted off the freeway at Grand River Road, creating major morning traffic disruptions and prompting MDOT to advise alternate routes.
  • Local authorities say a 38-year-old Detroit woman died in the crash, while a 36-year-old woman identified as the suspected wrong-way driver was hospitalized with a leg injury and listed in stable condition.
  • Michigan State Police completed a blood draw from the hospitalized suspect and said toxicology testing will be conducted as part of a preliminary investigation into why the driver entered the southbound lanes.
  • Investigators continue to collect evidence and reconstruct the sequence of events; wrong-way collisions on divided highways are high risk and the probe will look at factors such as possible impairment, navigation error, and vehicle condition.
