Writer Fukasawa Ushio Sues Over Shukan Shincho Column, Seeks ¥6.6 Million

The complaint targets a column plus a later book that, she says, demeaned people of Korean descent by urging they not use Japanese names.

Overview

  • Fukasawa filed a civil suit on January 22 in Tokyo District Court against columnist Masayuki Takayama and publisher WAC, seeking about ¥6.6 million in damages.
  • The disputed piece ran in the July 31, 2025 issue of Shukan Shincho under the title “Soshi Kaimei 2.0,” naming Fukasawa and others and stating that those who dislike Japan should not use Japanese names.
  • WAC later included the column in a commercially released book in November, which the suit cites as amplifying the harm.
  • The filing also points to coverage in WAC’s magazine WiLL (October issue) and an online program Daily WiLL (November) as further violations of her emotional dignity.
  • At a press conference, Fukasawa said she would not leave discrimination unchallenged, while WAC and Takayama told Mainichi they could not comment because they had not yet received the complaint; Shinchosha ended the column in August and ran an editor’s apology in December.
