Overview
- Kraken Technology Group and Capewell, supported by the Royal Navy’s Project Beehive, conducted a six-day North Sea campaign in early July that included four extracted-load airdrops of a K3 SCOUT from an A400M at 1,300 feet into up to Sea State 4.
- The tests validated the full delivery chain: Kraken’s optional airdrop kit, Capewell’s UMCADS parachute sled and the new electro-mechanical IN-Release system that synchronises reliable separation before the craft hits the water.
- Each dropped K3 SCOUT entered the sea ready for operations, demonstrating repeatability by using the same boat and platform for four live drops in six working days.
- The trial supports the Royal Navy’s Project Beehive plan, under which the service ordered 20 K3 SCOUT boats, while officials say more integration, testing and doctrinal work are required before the method becomes routine.
- If adopted, air-launched USVs could speed insertion into remote or contested chokepoints, reduce the need for forward basing or escort ships, and expand missions such as surveillance, force protection and logistics for Coastal Forces and Royal Marines.
