World Poetry Day 2026 Marked by Global Readings, Music and Community Events

UNESCO created the March 21 observance in 1999 to promote linguistic diversity, giving voice to minority languages.

Overview

  • Ámbito Cultural de El Corte Inglés in Santander hosted a continuous recital from 17:00 to 21:00 with about 30 regional cultural figures reading poems.
  • Across Argentina, cultural institutions organized open mics, tours and concerts, including Café con letras at Museo Roca, a Borges-themed open-air tour, and a revived poetry cycle at Museo Casa de Ricardo Rojas.
  • Programming reached beyond Buenos Aires, with Córdoba’s Córdoba Entera festival running through March 27 and readings at venues such as a Villa de Las Rosas pulpería and Comodoro Rivadavia’s Centro Cultural “Alfredo Sahdi”.
  • Coverage highlighted cross-disciplinary work as musician Sebastián Macchi discussed his settings of Juan L. Ortiz’s poems on Luz de Agua and said he is performing new songs as a soloist.
  • Context pieces revisited definitions and origins, citing the RAE’s description of poetry and scholarship that identifies Enheduanna as the earliest named author.
