Workers Describe Hiding Orders and Cash Pay in Bizkaia Labor-Rights Trial

Testimony in the provincial court highlights tactics used to keep undocumented staff off the books.

Overview

  • Six former La Gilda del Norte workers testified in the Sección Segunda de la Audiencia de Bizkaia during the first session of the criminal case against the company’s owner and his daughter.
  • The witnesses said they had no written contracts while in irregular immigration status and were warned they could be deported if discovered.
  • They recounted being told to hide during inspections, describing retreats to a bathroom or a cold room and once going onto a roof to avoid police.
  • Workers described daily targets of roughly 110 to 120 jars of pintxos and said pay came in cash envelopes of about €800 a month, according to Diario Vasco.
  • In procedural developments, the prosecutor has excluded the daughter from the labor-rights charge, and three former employees have joined the case as private plaintiffs.
