Overview
- Earlier this week the Concello of Vigo started excavation to relocate two collectors under the Tribuna, hiring Aqualia for a project budgeted at €2,821,994 and installing 1.5–1.6‑metre pipes at 5–6 metres depth.
- The civil works are preparatory to expanding and moving the Tribuna about 30 metres toward Manuel de Castro so Balaídos can reach an expected capacity of roughly 41,000 spectators required by FIFA for 2030 host venues.
- Mayor Abel Caballero has asked the Xunta de Galicia and the Diputación de Pontevedra to each contribute about one third of the cost, estimating near‑€1 million per administration for these preliminary works.
- The Diputación publicly offered conditional cofinancing but said legal and technical limits tied to the water concession and billing prevent a straight budgetary consignation, a position the Vigo government has sharply criticized.
- Vigo says the schedule will meet FIFA deadlines and is continuing other upgrades such as the new Gol stand for next season, while final confirmation as a 2030 host still depends on federation endorsement and intergovernmental funding agreements.
