Overview

  • The wildfire started near Highway 1 by Timber Cove and Salt Point State Park and grew to about 142–143 acres after spreading through coastal redwoods and prairie.
  • Mandatory evacuation orders cover zone SON-1D1 including Salt Point State Park, Steelwater Cove, Ocean Cove camp and the Timber Cove subdivision with a temporary shelter at Laguna High School.
  • Cal Fire and local agencies increased resources to roughly 320 personnel with dozens of engines, helicopters, hand crews and dozers and reported containment climbed to about 30 percent after overnight work.
  • Heavy smoke pushed particle pollution into unhealthy to hazardous ranges across the North Bay, prompting a Spare the Air alert, advice to stay indoors and a ban on wood burning during the alert.
  • Highway 1 remains closed between Timber Cove Road and Stewarts Point–Skaggs Springs Road, no injuries or structure losses have been reported so far, and investigators are working to determine the fire's cause.
