Overview
- The hourslong standoff began Sunday afternoon when a woman went to the LAPD Topanga station to report she had been severely beaten and raped by her husband, prompting officers to follow up at the couple’s townhouse.
- When officers arrived the man barricaded himself inside and refused to leave, and police said records show he is a registered gun owner with multiple firearms believed to be inside the home.
- Tactical measures, including reported deployment of tear gas, were used and nearby homes were evacuated as officers contained the scene and a SWAT team remained on standby.
- Late Sunday night the two-story, three-unit townhouse caught fire and LAFD crews who had been on standby reported that shots were fired while they battled flames and heard what sounded like ammunition detonating in the blaze.
- A woman believed to be the suspect’s wife sustained injuries and investigators later found human remains that they currently presume belong to the suspect; authorities continue to probe the origin of the fire, the source of gunfire, and any additional casualties.
