Women Lead Malegaon as ISLAM–SP Alliance Wins Mayor, Deputy Mayor With Congress Votes

AIMIM abstentions plus BJP neutrality cleared the path for the bloc to secure the 43-vote threshold.

Overview

  • ISLAM’s Sheikh Nasreen Khalid was elected mayor and the Samajwadi Party’s Shaan-e-Hind Nihal Ahmed won the deputy mayor post in Malegaon.
  • Both secured 43 votes drawn from 35 ISLAM corporators, five from the SP, and three from the Congress, defeating Shiv Sena nominees who polled 18 each.
  • AIMIM and the BJP did not participate in the vote, leaving the second-largest party in the house out of the new civic leadership.
  • The 84-seat corporation elected ISLAM 35, AIMIM 21, Shiv Sena 18, SP five, Congress three, and the BJP two in the January 15 polls.
  • Congress leaders had publicly pledged support to the ISLAM–SP combine, days after the party suspended its Malegaon city chief Ejaz Beg over alleged outreach to the BJP.
