Women* 'General Strike' Brings Berlin Protest to Brandenburg Gate

Organizers cast the action as part of a global strike to expose society’s reliance on women’s work.

Overview

  • Police reported roughly 700 participants at the Brandenburg Gate gathering, while organizers counted up to 1,200.
  • Spokespeople said coordinated actions also took place in Bonn, Cologne, Tübingen, Munich and Bremen as part of a Global Women* Generalstreik.
  • The initiative Enough! Genug! described the protest as a symbolic pause of paid and unpaid labor to highlight women’s central role in the economy.
  • Participants included institutions such as Charité, the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences and the group BIG – Berliner Initiative gegen Gewalt an Frauen.
  • A separate Frauenstreik Berlin march drew about 500 people from Kottbusser Tor to the Red City Hall and called for €2.1 billion for violence protection and women’s shelters instead of police spending.
