Woman Killed in Head-On Crash Near Royal Wootton Bassett As Driver Is Arrested

A mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct adds independent oversight to an active evidence-gathering inquiry.

Overview

  • The head-on collision between an orange Peugeot 107 and a black Vauxhall Astra occurred on the B4696 between Brinkworth Road and Lydiard Plain on Tuesday, June 30, and the Peugeot driver, a woman in her 70s, was declared dead at the scene.
  • The Vauxhall driver, a 43-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries and has been arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and causing death by driving while unfit through drink or drugs; he will be questioned when medically fit.
  • A teenage girl who was a passenger in the Vauxhall was also taken to hospital with injuries and is receiving treatment.
  • Wiltshire Police made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct after receiving multiple public calls about the suspect earlier on the day of the crash, which means the watchdog will independently review the force’s handling of the case.
  • The Serious Collision Investigation Team is appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage to support enquiries, asking anyone with information to quote log number 318 of June 30 or contact SCIT on 01225 694597 or at SCIT@wiltshire.police.uk.
