Woman Killed by Wild Elephant in Kerala's Wayanad

Officials pledged to remove the animal, offer immediate relief to the family, then convene ministers to review and strengthen local safety measures.

Overview

  • A wild elephant attacked a scooter at Kalladi near Meppadi, killing the woman passenger identified as Jessy and injuring her husband Shaji, who was admitted to VIMS Medical College Hospital.
  • Local residents said the same elephant had been seen in the area about two weeks earlier, suggesting the animal’s presence was known before the attack.
  • Police and forest department teams reached the scene and authorities announced immediate financial aid of Rs 5 lakh and a temporary government job for one family member.
  • Wayanad Divisional Forest Officer Ashik Ali said operational steps will be taken to drive the elephant away and strengthen fencing and other safety arrangements to reduce future incidents.
  • The district’s repeated human–elephant conflicts have raised local demands for better protections, and officials’ planned ministerial review may speed policy and on-the-ground measures that affect both safety and wildlife management.
