Woman Killed by Alligator in Central Florida River

Authorities have sent DNA from two captured alligators to a state lab to determine which animal attacked the swimmer.

Overview

  • A 31-year-old Orlando woman, identified by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission as Brittany Clark, was attacked while wading with friends and died from severe arm injuries sustained during the incident on Sunday.
  • Florida Fish and Wildlife officers, Seminole County deputies and a contracted trapper recovered two large alligators near the Barr Street Trailhead, measuring about 13 feet and 12 feet, and collected samples for DNA testing at the Gainesville lab.
  • Investigators have not determined a cause for the attack and are examining factors that can raise risk, including the end of mating season and unusually low water levels from drought.
  • The fatal attack is the most serious in a short cluster of incidents in Central Florida, with three alligator bites reported in seven days, including a juvenile bitten the day before at Nelson Fish Camp.
  • FWC urged people to report problem alligators through the Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program hotline, warned that relocation is usually ineffective, and advised simple safety steps such as keeping distance from waterways and never feeding alligators.
