Woman in Wheelchair Killed Crossing Route 50 in Fairfax County

Investigators have preliminarily ruled out driver speed or alcohol as the Crash Reconstruction unit gathers evidence and seeks witness tips.

Overview

  • Theresa Flynn, 53, of Chantilly, was struck while using a mobility wheelchair to cross Route 50 outside a marked crosswalk and later died from her injuries.
  • The collision occurred at the Route 50 and Plaza Lane area in Greenbriar when a westbound Kia Rio struck Flynn as she moved north across the roadway.
  • Emergency crews took Flynn to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead and the Kia driver remained at the scene uninjured.
  • Fairfax County Police say preliminary work by the Crash Reconstruction Unit indicates speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors, but detectives are continuing evidence collection.
  • Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Crash Reconstruction Unit or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Solvers, and authorities note final findings could change as the probe continues.
