Overview
- Emergency services were alerted on Monday 22 June after a beach hut owner raised the alarm and members of the public pulled a woman from the sea between Fisherman’s Walk and Portman Ravine.
- Paramedics and bystanders carried out prolonged CPR on the sand but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, Dorset Police said.
- The South Western Ambulance Service sent two double-crewed land ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, an operations officer and an air ambulance to the beach.
- Dorset Police confirmed the call time and location, said the woman’s next of kin have been informed, the coroner has been notified and the death is not being treated as suspicious.
- The incident occurred during a period of extreme heat with Met Office amber and red warnings in parts of the region, a context that officials and safety groups say has increased coastal turnout and open-water risk.
