Wolvaardt Named Captain as Proteas Announce Squad for First T20I Tour of Zimbabwe

Coach Mandla Mashimbyi says the young selection focuses on giving Emerging players international exposure because several senior stars are unavailable with franchise commitments.

Overview

  • The 15-player Proteas squad was announced on Wednesday, August 19, for a five-match T20I series at Queen’s Sports Club in Bulawayo from September 11 to 19.
  • Laura Wolvaardt will captain the touring side and leads a group that includes three uncapped players: Caitlin Wyngaard, Nthabiseng Nini and Luyanda Nzuza.
  • Cricket South Africa set a pre-tour camp at Irene Cricket Club from September 2–6 with the team due to depart for Zimbabwe on September 7.
  • Selectors recalled several players who missed the recent T20 World Cup to add experience, while Mashimbyi said many usual senior players are unavailable because they are playing in franchise leagues.
  • The series gives Zimbabwe the chance to host a Test-playing nation in a bilateral women’s T20I for the first time and offers South Africa a platform to evaluate emerging talent and Wolvaardt’s captaincy ahead of future global tournaments.
