WKRP Returns to Cincinnati Airwaves as a Real Station

A donation to a North Carolina nonprofit cleared the regulatory path to use the famous call letters.

Overview

  • The station adopted the WKRP call letters Monday during morning drive, and co-owner Jeff Ziesmann said callers flooded the phones.
  • The programming now runs as a three-frequency simulcast on 94.5, 97.7 and 106.7, covering Cincinnati, northern Kentucky and up toward Dayton.
  • The format remains adult hits from the 1960s through the 1980s with a strong 1970s focus, continuing what listeners knew as The Oasis.
  • Grant County Broadcasters obtained the calls by donating to a Raleigh nonprofit that held WKRP-LP, which enabled an FCC filing because low-power and full-power stations are treated as separate classes.
  • During the launch, 97.7 looped the TV theme for six hours and actor Gary Sandy voiced promos, while Richard Sanders offered a Les Nessman-style nod to the revival.
