Wizards Expected to Sideline Anthony Davis for Remainder of Season After Trade

Washington is prioritizing his recovery and lottery positioning as it seeks to retain its top-eight-protected 2026 first-round pick.

Overview

  • League insider Chris Haynes reported that Davis will sit the rest of 2025-26 to rehab hand and groin injuries, with plans to be fully ready for 2026-27.
  • Dallas sent Davis to Washington in a deadline deal that also brought D’Angelo Russell, Jaden Hardy and Dante Exum to the Wizards, while the Mavericks received Khris Middleton and draft compensation.
  • Davis pushed back on claims he was unhappy with the move, telling The Athletic he wants to hear the team’s long-term plan; he has not played since Jan. 8 and averaged 20.4 points and 11.1 rebounds in 20 games for Dallas.
  • The Athletic reported that agent Rich Paul was not consulted during the trade process, even as he had previously communicated options to Dallas.
  • With Trae Young also sidelined and re-evaluations ahead, Washington is managing minutes and injuries with an eye on lottery odds; Davis is owed $58.4 million in 2026-27 with a $62.7 million player option for 2027-28.
