With Deadline Weeks Away, Councils Split on Food Waste Rollout: Brighton Finishes as Others Slip to 2026–27

Councils blame vehicle shortages plus long-term contracts despite DEFRA grants.

Overview

  • BBC analysis shows at least 71 English councils will miss the March 31 requirement, with DEFRA citing more than £340m in support and 31 bespoke transitional arrangements including York’s long-running contract to 2043.
  • Bradford expects to start weekly food waste collections in September due to vehicle delivery lead times, after receiving £4.8m for trucks and bins.
  • North East Lincolnshire has awarded a £5.9m vehicle contract to Dennis Eagle and is working toward a Spring 2027 start while procuring caddies and route optimisation.
  • Brighton & Hove begins the final rollout phase on March 9, completing weekly food waste collections for about 136,000 households citywide.
  • Redcar and Cleveland will deliver caddies from March 23 with weekly collections phased in from April to May, and County Durham plans a spring–summer launch following supply-chain delays.
