Winthrop Man Held Without Bail After Alleged Repeated Assault and Orders to Lie

• Prosecutors allege Anthony Stokes, 39, repeatedly struck a 39-year-old woman in multiple locations the night before she arrived at Massachusetts General Hospital, leaving her with swollen eyes, scratches and bruises.
• Hospital staff first directed the injured woman from an East Boston clinic to Mass General, offered a rideshare, and prosecutors say Stokes insisted on driving her and struck her again en route.
• Police found Stokes parked outside the MGH emergency room and say he gave conflicting accounts, at one point blaming a group of women for the victim’s injuries.
