Wingard Confirms ThunderCats Film Is Still in Development

A new script draft exists but active work is paused while Wingard finishes other films, leaving Warner Bros. to decide the project’s scale in light of recent reboot box‑office trends.

Overview

  • Wingard, who spoke to Polygon on Monday, said the live-action/CGI ThunderCats project “is not dead” and that he and co-writer Simon Barrett completed a new draft earlier this year.
  • The film remains in the scripting stage and Wingard has put active development on hold while he finishes and promotes other projects such as Godzilla x Kong and Onslaught.
  • Wingard’s stated creative goal is a hybrid CGI, hyperreal movie that preserves the original 1980s ThunderCats look rather than a conventional live-action translation.
  • Warner Bros. Pictures Animation announced a separate ThunderCats animated feature at the Annecy festival in June, and sources say it is unclear whether that effort is the same as Wingard’s project.
  • Industry coverage notes that recent box-office weakness for comparable ’80s reboots may prompt Warner Bros. to scale the project, change its release plan, or favor a streaming-first strategy.
