Windrose Patch Slashes SSD Writes After Reports of Drive Wear

Independent tests show the fix cut constant disk activity enough to ease concerns about damaging SSDs.

Overview

  • Kraken Express, which shipped a fix on April 30, cut write speeds during play to about 10–16MB/s in tests and reduced total writes by roughly 60–75%.
  • A subsequent update added automatic save backups every 10 minutes and when you exit the game to protect progression data.
  • The excessive writes traced to the game's RocksDB save setup, where three databases with a tiny cache forced near-constant disk writes.
  • Players had flagged high I/O and posted fears on Steam about “frying” drives, with some reporting SSD temperatures spiking to around 83°C.
  • The studio says it is not planning progress wipes during Early Access and is focusing on stability fixes before larger content drops.
