Wimbledon Introduces Video Review for Umpire Judgement Calls on Six Show Courts This Year

The move fills gaps left by automated line calling by allowing unlimited challenges to chair-umpire rulings.

Overview

  • Players may request unlimited reviews for not-up, double-bounce, touch, foul shot and hindrance decisions, the AELTC said.
  • Reviews will operate on six show courts, with Centre Court and No. 1 Court covered throughout the Championships and other show courts until singles conclude.
  • Electronic line calling introduced last year remains final for in/out and fault calls, which cannot be challenged through video review.
  • Scoreboards on all courts will add visual indicators showing “out” and “fault” to make ELC decisions clearer to spectators.
  • The rollout follows use at the US Open and Australian Open and reflects recent flashpoints such as the MedvedevDraper hindrance review and last year’s Kartal–Pavlyuchenkova ELC issue; Wimbledon starts June 29 and Roehampton qualifying capacity increases to 4,000 per day.
