Wildfires Shut Amtrak’s Florida Corridor, Stranding Hundreds and Forcing Cancellations

Officials warn dry, windy weather could prolong disruptions.

Overview

  • The track closures that began Monday near the Clay–Putnam county line halted Amtrak travel in and out of Florida as firefighters worked along the route north of Palatka.
  • Train 98, which returned to Miami late Monday with 232 people on board, left passengers stuck 24 to 38 hours with scarce food, overflowing toilets, and an on-train medical response near DeLand.
  • Two fires — the Crews Road Fire in Clay County at about 1,700 acres and the Railroad Complex Fire in Putnam County at about 1,000 acres — have burned roughly 2,700 to 3,000 acres with little containment reported.
  • Amtrak canceled or truncated the Silver Meteor, Floridian, and Auto Train services, offered full refunds and travel vouchers, arranged limited buses between Miami and Jacksonville, and returned some trains to their origin points.
  • Local officials are investigating a report that sparks from a train likely ignited one blaze as the National Weather Service cites gusty winds and low humidity that raise the risk of continued fire spread.
