Overview
- A grass-and-gorse fire broke out at Torduff Reservoir, which was reported on Thursday May 28 at about 5.50pm, and produced plumes of smoke seen across the city.
- The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service dispatched six pump appliances to the scene and crews remained in attendance into the following morning with no reported injuries.
- The SFRS and the Scottish Wildfire Forum have issued a 'very high' wildfire risk warning for eastern Scotland from May 29 to June 1 and have urged people not to light outdoor fires and to report sightings to 999.
- Police Scotland and SFRS partners are conducting enquiries to establish the cause while Pentland Hills Regional Park advised visitors to keep to waymarked paths and avoid disturbing charred ground to prevent re-ignition and help recovery.
- Local residents were told to keep windows and doors shut because of smoke and officials warned that repeated upland fires can take years to recover and could strain emergency resources if conditions persist.
