WII Confirms Manipur-Tagged Amur Falcons Active in Somalia, Zimbabwe and Botswana

Researchers now watch for the birds' northward return to refine conservation at Tamenglong's key roost.

Overview

  • Latest satellite readings on February 27 report Ahu in Somalia, Apapang in Zimbabwe and Alang in Botswana.
  • All three Phase II birds are described as healthy with normal activity, according to WII scientist Dr. R. Suresh Kumar.
  • Earlier concern about Ahu's limited movements has been resolved with data showing localized activity within Somalia.
  • The raptors were tagged on November 8, 2025 at the Chiuluan roost in Tamenglong through a collaboration of WII, the Manipur Forest Department, Tamenglong Forest Division officials and village volunteers.
  • Officials note the trio reached Africa in about nine to ten days and continue wintering as researchers track timing and routes for the return migration, drawing on past timing from the bird known as Chiuluan-2.
