Wiesbaden WWII Bomb Safely Defused

The closures showed how WWII ordnance still disrupts daily life in German cities.

Overview

  • The 500-kilogram aerial bomb was made safe Wednesday around 12:15, and officials ended the evacuation and reopened the area.
  • Crews found the US-made device Tuesday during survey work for road construction near the B455 access to the Lucius D. Clay Kaserne.
  • Authorities cleared a roughly 700-meter zone affecting about 50 residents, set up a care point at a Johanniter station, and ran a dedicated citizen hotline.
  • Traffic managers shut the A66 between Erbenheim and Nordenstadt from 10:30, along with the B455 and the Wiesbaden–Cologne rail line, which slowed morning travel.
  • The A66 stretch carries about 94,000 cars and 5,600 trucks a day, so the planned shutdown had an outsized impact on commuters and freight.
