Widespread Storm Alerts Persist in Argentina as Buenos Aires Braces for a Rainy Start to the Week

Forecasters now expect two wet days to start the week, raising flood risks during commutes.

Overview

  • The National Meteorological Service, which kept yellow and orange thunderstorm alerts in place on Sunday, listed parts of Buenos Aires, La Pampa, Entre Ríos, Santa Fe, Córdoba, Corrientes, Santiago del Estero, Chaco and Salta.
  • An orange alert signals dangerous storms with frequent lightning, a chance of hail, gusts near 90 km/h and 60–100 mm of rain, while a yellow alert warns of disruptive weather with 30–60 mm and gusts near 70 km/h.
  • In the Buenos Aires metro area, recent storms brought reports of 70 millimeters of rain in an hour, hail and gusts near 100 km/h that flooded streets, downed trees and cut power in several suburbs.
  • In Catamarca, rising levels on the Río del Valle forced a full closure of Provincial Route 24 between Miraflores and Las Tejas as road crews waited for the water to drop.
  • For AMBA, the official forecast calls for steady rain on Monday and Tuesday with highs around 20–21°C after a weekend cooldown, which could prolong flooding and slow the return to work and school.
