WHO Urges Opening Gaza Crossings for Patient Evacuations as Crisis Persists

WHO says establishing daily medical corridors through all crossings would transform care for thousands still waiting to leave for treatment.

Overview

  • Only 41 critically ill patients have been evacuated since the Oct 10 ceasefire, with WHO saying it is ready to transfer at least 50 patients per day and warning the current pace would take years.
  • Roughly 15,000 people, including about 4,000 children, still need treatment outside Gaza, and the agency reports more than 700 have died while waiting for evacuation.
  • Gaza’s health system remains shattered with no fully functioning hospitals and just 14 of 36 partially operating, and WHO estimates at least $7 billion is needed to rebuild core health services.
  • Humanitarian deliveries remain far below targets, with 200–300 trucks entering daily versus a 600-truck goal and food supplies far short of WFP’s 2,000‑tonne daily target as only two crossings operate.
  • Aid groups report widespread rejections of relief requests and say commercial goods often fail to meet nutritional needs, while MSF has resumed limited work in Gaza City but warns conditions are horrific and large stocks of medical supplies remain stuck at borders.
