WHO Reports Early Flu Surge Across Europe Driven by A(H3N2) Subclade K

WHO urges vaccination to reduce severe illness ahead of a peak projected between late December and early January.

Overview

  • Influenza activity across the WHO European Region began about four weeks earlier than in recent seasons.
  • At least 27 of 38 reporting countries are at high or very high activity, and Ireland, Kyrgyzstan, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia and the United Kingdom report over 50% positivity among patients tested for influenza‑like illness.
  • The A(H3N2) subclade K now accounts for up to 90% of confirmed cases, with no evidence it causes more severe disease.
  • Early United Kingdom data indicate the current seasonal vaccine lowers the risk of severe outcomes from A(H3N2) even when infections occur.
  • WHO advises vaccination for high‑risk groups and recommends hand hygiene, staying home when unwell and wearing a mask with respiratory symptoms, noting children drive spread and adults 65+ comprise most severe hospitalizations.
