WHO Evacuates 41 Gaza Patients as Aid Falls Far Short Under Ceasefire

Aid groups blame Israeli controls for food flows far below UN targets.

Overview

  • WHO said 41 critically ill patients and 145 companions were transferred on Oct 23, with about 15,000 to 15,600 more awaiting evacuation, including roughly 3,800 children.
  • WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported no reduction in hunger since the Oct 10 truce, saying only 200 to 300 trucks enter daily and many carry commercial goods unaffordable to most people.
  • The World Food Programme said supplies remain far under its 2,000-ton daily goal because only two crossings are open and none reach the famine-hit north.
  • A coalition of more than 40 organizations, including Oxfam, MSF and the Norwegian Refugee Council, said Israeli authorities rejected 99 NGO requests and six UN requests between Oct 10 and 21.
  • WHO described a shattered health system with only 14 of 36 hospitals functioning and estimated at least $7 billion is needed for rebuilding, while urging Rafah’s reopening after months of curtailed evacuations.
