WHO Assesses Low Risk Following Contained Two-Case Nipah Cluster in West Bengal

Precautionary airport screening continues across Asia despite WHO guidance against travel restrictions.

Overview

  • India confirmed two Nipah infections in West Bengal among nurses, with the male patient discharged and the female patient off ventilator support and still under observation after both later tested negative.
  • WHO says the likelihood of wider spread is low and reports no evidence of increased human-to-human transmission, advising against travel or trade curbs.
  • Indian authorities traced roughly 190–196 contacts of the two cases and report that all have tested negative, with the cluster remaining geographically confined.
  • Airports and health authorities in places including Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nepal and the Philippines have implemented temperature checks, health declarations and travel history reviews.
  • The CDC says it is closely monitoring the situation and ready to assist, while the UKHSA issued traveler advice noting Nipah’s high fatality rate, lack of approved vaccines and the need to avoid bats, sick animals and raw date palm sap.
