Which? Finds Some ‘Healthy’ Mueslis Score Worse Than KitKat Cereal, Budget Own‑Brands Lead

The watchdog’s nutrient‑profile testing highlights how wellness branding can mask high sugar, calories or saturated fat.

Overview

  • Which? tested 86 mueslis using the government Nutrient Profiling Model, comparing results with Nestlé’s KitKat cereal, which scored 56 out of 100.
  • Raw Gorilla Keto Mighty Muesli ranked lowest at 46/100 due to high saturated fat and calories, with Eat Natural Gluten Free at 50 and Waitrose Essential No Added Sugar at 62 with 19.5g sugar per 100g.
  • Supermarket value lines from Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco scored 80/100 and cost under 10p per bowl, outperforming many pricier brands.
  • Most products were still rated healthy overall, with 52 of 86 scoring between 74 and 78 on Which?’s scale where 63 and above counts as a pass.
  • Which? warned that “no added sugar” claims and self‑served portions can mislead shoppers, while RawGorilla and Mornflake argued the model penalises natural fats and overlooks levels of processing.
