Wheldon Takes Zandvoort Double to Lead FREC

His two wins put the 17-year-old atop the provisional standings as several penalties and appeals leave race results unsettled ahead of Spa.

Overview

  • Sebastian Wheldon converted Group B pole into victory in Race 1, edging Salim Hanna by 0.249 seconds and taking his first Formula Regional Europe win.
  • Kean Nakamura-Berta was disqualified from Qualifying 1 for a parc fermé infringement and started Race 1 from the back with Prema lodging an appeal against that decision.
  • Nakamura-Berta recovered to claim pole for Race 2 but Wheldon passed him after the restart to complete the weekend double and resist a late challenge.
  • Race 2 was red-flagged and restarted after a multi-car crash at the end of the back straight that included a barrel-roll by Andrija Kostić and left several cars stranded in the gravel.
  • Wheldon leads the provisional championship by 12 points and the meeting remains provisional because multiple time penalties and qualifying disqualifications are under appeal, with the series now heading to Spa-Francorchamps.
