Overview
- WhatsApp saves incoming photos, videos, audio, and documents by default, which can quietly fill storage and burn mobile data in active group chats.
- The built-in Manage storage screen highlights files larger than about 5 MB, items forwarded many times, and chats that take up the most space to guide what to delete.
- Users can turn off automatic downloads in Settings > Storage and data by unchecking Photos, Audio, Videos, and Documents for mobile data and Wi‑Fi.
- Files removed through Manage storage are gone for good, so creating a backup before deleting is recommended.
- Turning off Media visibility in Chats stops WhatsApp downloads from appearing in the phone’s gallery, which helps keep clutter and sensitive media out of view.
