WhatsApp Plans AI Label for Channel Media

The tag is intended to help channel admins meet country-level rules by marking images, videos or other media created or edited with AI.

Overview

  • Reporters discovered the feature in WhatsApp’s Android beta after an update published earlier this week, and the label is still under development and not yet available to testers or the public.
  • Channel admins will add the tag from a message context menu by tap-and-holding an update and choosing “Add AI content label,” and the label appears to remain attached once applied.
  • The label is designed for non-text media only, covering images, video and other media made or edited with any AI tool, while AI-assisted text and WhatsApp’s Writing Help are likely exempt.
  • Coverage from testers and tech outlets says the move is driven by national transparency rules such as the EU’s new requirements, so WhatsApp is expected to roll the feature out selectively by jurisdiction and later to iOS.
  • The label builds on WhatsApp’s recent paid-partnership tag and gives followers a clear marker for AI-made media, shifting responsibility to channel admins to disclose AI use and affecting how audiences assess image and video trustworthiness.
