- WhatsApp, which opened early username reservations on Saturday, is rolling the option out in phases so users can claim handles before the full Usernames feature arrives later in 2026.
- Users can reserve a handle inside the app at Settings > Account > Username and check availability or set an existing Instagram or Facebook name to keep a consistent public handle.
- Phone numbers remain required to create and verify accounts, and existing contacts will still see your number; usernames are an optional layer that lets strangers message you without seeing your phone number on first contact if you enable them.
- WhatsApp says there will be no public directory and that an optional username key will block first-time messages from people who do not know that key, and the company will use automated lookalike blocking, reserved high-profile names, and other detection tools to limit impersonation.
- The change is aimed at creators, small businesses and users who want privacy or consistent cross-platform handles, but regulators in some markets, including India, are watching for impersonation and safety risks as the feature expands.
